Hello lovelies,
If there’s one thing the British are known for, it’s guaranteeing you will be offered a cuppa tea and biscuit upon visiting our humble abode.
We are a nation of biscuit lovers and whilst I love most biscuits produced here in the UK, my ultimate favourite has to be a cheeky hobnob.
First made and produced in 1985, McVities created the famous hobnob and have since gone on to sell billions of packets (I’d definitely say I’ve made up a good percentage of those sells over the years, I won’t lie haha).
Furthermore, one thing I’m absolutely loving at the moment is seeing bakers recreating their own versions of the famous, old time classic biscuits like: the hobnob, custard creams, bourbons, party rings etc.
Jane Patisserie being one of those people. I stumbled across Jane’s version back last month and instantly knew I had to recreate asap.

Being a hobnob enthusiast, I needed to know if Jane’s homemade version tasted anywhere near as good as the original and let’s just say… I’m obsessed.
Dunked in a nice cup of rosie lee, these homemade hobnobs are absolutely blooming delicious. They’re super close in taste to the McVities original and are super quick and easy to recreate.
Jane absolutely smashed it with this recipe!
So, if you’re a hobnob lover and fancy baking a batch of your own then you know the drill by now. Keep on scrolling below and you’ll find today’s recipe.

Category: Sweet Treat
Servings: 16-18 Biscuits
Prep Time: 15 Minutes
Bake Time: 15 Minutes
Decorating Time: 10 Minutes
Overall Time: 40-60 Minutes
Ingredients You Need For The Hobnobs:
- 100g Of Unsalted Butter
- 100g Of Light Brown Sugar
- 50g Of Golden Syrup
- 125g Of Rolled Oats
- 1/2tsp Of Bicarbonate Of Soda
- 150g Of Wholemeal Plain Flour
Ingredients You Need To Decorate:
- 100g Of Milk Chocolate, Melted
How To Make The Hobnobs:
- Firstly, gather together your equipment and ingredients, line two baking trays with parchment paper and preheat the oven to 180C / 160C Fan / Gas Mark 4.
- Secondly, in a large bowl, beat together the 100g of unsalted butter, 100g of light brown sugar and 50g of golden syrup until combined.
- Next, add the 125g of rolled oats, 1/2tsp of bicarbonate of soda and 150g of wholemeal flour and mix again, until combined (TIP: if your struggling to combine the dough, you need to continue mixing to bring the dough together. Sometimes using the warmth of your hands will help it bind but eventually it will combine).
- Now, portion the biscuit into heaped tablespoons, then using your hands, roll into balls.
- Place 6 biscuits onto each baking tray and gently press each cookie down by half.
- Bake in the oven for roughly 12-15 minutes and then leave to fully cool on the baking trays before carefully transferring onto a wire rack.
How To Decorate:
- Now that the biscuits have cooled, it’s time to decorate.
- In a microwaveable bowl, add the 100g of milk chocolate, place into the microwave and in 10 second blasts, blast the chocolate until fully melted.
- Spread a teaspoon of chocolate onto the base of each biscuit and spread out to the edges.
- Finally, place into the fridge for 10-20 minutes to allow the chocolate to set before serving.
That’s your Homemade Hobnobs Biscuits prepared, baked, cooled and decorated, ready for you to enjoy!
Notes:
- Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.
- These biscuits are able to be frozen for up to 3+ months.
- You can swap the plain wholemeal flour for plain flour, it will work, however the flavour will change and won’t be as accurate.
- If you want to portion the biscuits equally, I would recommend using a 4cm scoop, I used this one: https://amzn.eu/d/
- if your really struggling to bring the dough together, I’d recommend adding a small amount of golden syrup to help it hold.
- You can dunk the biscuits in chocolate instead of spooning it on to the biscuits.
- I wouldn’t keep these biscuits refrigerated as they go hard, therefore harder to bite into and eat.

Whilst I won’t stop buying McVities, creating hobnobs from the comfort of my own home has been a game changer and believe me when I say, I will be making batch after batch of these.
Huge shoutout to Jane, whose instructions I followed to create today’s recipe and let’s just say, it certainly didn’t disappoint! My friends and family demolished the lot off in 24 hours, so let that be your sign that tells you how damn good these are!
Let me know in the comments below if you make these hobnobs yourself and if you do, what your thoughts are on them. Did you find this homemade batch to be close in taste to the famous original?
Sending your all tons of love & hugs as always,
Elle xo
