Hello lovelies,
Whilst scrolling through social media recently, I’ve seen ‘cake jars’ become a huge craze and I instantly felt drawn to them.
I mean, what’s not to love? Layers of moist cake between layers of silky smooth buttercream – sounds like heaven to me.
Therefore, it was only right that I jump on the craze and create some cake jars of my own. Only, mine aren’t any normal ‘cake jars’, mine are witches brew cake jars!
I couldn’t honestly think of a bake more perfect or fitting to create a ‘witches brew’ vibe than these cake jars. Between the colours, the witches legs and added sprinkles, these jars will be a HIT with all ages (that’s not even including the taste – it tastes as good as it looks, I promise).
So, if my cake jars have caught your attention and got you wanting more, you know the drill by now. Keep on scrolling below and you’ll find today’s recipe.

- 400g Of Caster Sugar
- 8 Medium Eggs
- 325g Of Self-Raising Flour
- 1tsp Of Baking Powder
- 75g Of Cocoa Powder

Ingredients You Need To Decorate:
- 300g Of Unsalted Butter
- 500g Of Icing Sugar
- 2tsp Of Vanilla Bean Paste
- 1tsp Of Lime Green Food Colouring

- Witches Legs
How To Make The Chocolate Cake:
- Firstly, gather together your equipment and ingredients, line a 9×13 traybake tin with parchment paper and preheat the oven to 180C / 160C Fan / Gas Mark 4.
- Secondly, beat together the 400g of unsalted butter and 400g of caster sugar until light and fluffy.
- Next, one at a time, beating well between each addition, mix in the 8 medium eggs and 1tsp of vanilla extract until combined.
- Now, add the 325g of self-raising flour, 75g of cocoa powder and 1tsp of baking powder and mix together until combined.
- Add 1tsp of black food colouring into the cake batter and mix until the cake is black.
- Pour the black cake batter into the prepared baking tin. Place the baking tin into the oven and bake for 45-50 minutes, until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean.
- Once baked, remove from the oven and allow to cool fully in the tin.
- When fully cool, remove from the baking tin and using a circle cookie cutter, cut out as many circles of cake as you possibly can.
- The cake circles will be relatively thick, so using a knife, slice the cake circles horizontally in half.
- Set to one side.
How To Make The Buttercream:
- In a stand mixer or large bowl using an electric whisk, beat the 300g of unsalted butter until loosened.
- In two/three additions, beating well between each addition, beat in the 500g of icing sugar, 1st of vanilla extract and 1tsp of green food colouring until a silky smooth green buttercream has formed.
- Place the buttercream into a large piping bag with a 2D star nozzle attached.
- Set to one side.
How To Assemble:
- To assemble, gently push in the first cake layer into each jar.
- Next, pipe the first layer of green buttercream onto the cake layer starting from the outside working into the centre.
- Top with another layer of cake, then buttercream, then cake and finishing with a layer of buttercream on top.
- Finally, top each of the cake jars with some halloween coloured sprinkles and the witches legs.
That’s your Witches Brew Cake Jars prepared, baked, cooled and assembled, ready for you to enjoy!
Notes:
- You can store these cake jars at room temperature for 2-3 days, however, i would recommend eating within the first 24-48 hours for the freshest taste.
- You can also store in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. I would however, recommend removing the cake jars from the fridge and allowing them to sit at room temperature for 15-20 minutes before serving.
