The Skinny Food Co Review | Is It Worth Your Money?!

Hello lovelies,

You’ve probably heard of this brand ‘The Skinny Food Co’ before if you have any kind of social media. It’s been advertised all over social media throughout the last three years and that’s how I become aware of the brand.

Now, from what I have read, this is quite a controversial brand. Some love whilst others hate.

I don’t usually judge a brand by what others say, I like to make my own opinions. That’s why, after much deliberation, I thought ‘bugger it’ let’s try the brand myself (3 years after it launching haha) and form my own opinions.

So let’s get into it…

About ‘The Skinny Food Co’

“The Skinny Food Co was founded in May 2018. James Whiting & Wayne Starkey (Directors) have previous experience working in the food and drink/health & wellbeing market and discovered a need for great tasting healthy products. Fuelled by diabetic family members that avoid so many favoured foods the brand was born into the launch of Zero Calorie Syrups, healthy virtually zero table sauces and following on shortly after.. healthy snacking options”

This statement is taken from the Skinny Foods website.

What Drew Me To The Brand?

What mainly drew me to the brand is that it’s diabetic friendly. Most of you will know I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes back in august last year and have been trying to find diabetic alternatives to try myself.

So, I thought I’d buy a few of the items from this brand to give a go as I’ve always been intrigued by their claims. I know a few of you guys yourself have diabetes or have someone close to you that does, so I wanted review it for you guys also. You know I like to hook you up and let you know my honest opinions!

What Did I Buy From The Brand & How Much Did Each Item Cost?

My Review On The Products… Do These Products Taste How They Claim? What’s Their Texture Etc?

I’ve been using the products for around 4 weeks now so I think it’s fair to say I’ve given them enough trialling to form my own opinions on them.

SYRUPS:

So as you’ll of seen above, I brought 5 different syrups as they are what caught my eye the most. I wanted to buy a small variety of flavours so I could really put them to the test.

I’m going to be honest, I almost feel gutted about these. I had such high expectations for them but they didn’t blow me away like I’d hoped.

I’ve been trailing all 5 of the syrups in different ways and one comment I will make is that the flavours don’t pack a punch like I was expecting. I get that they won’t be like your typical syrup you buy from Asda as they are packed with calories but i expected more from these syrups. For example, I used 1/4 of the Cookies & Cream bottle just trying to get some flavour into my milkshake.

That being said, the taste of the syrups is quite nice when you can actually taste it. I enjoyed the majority of the flavours I brought, the acceptance being the raspberry white chocolate syrup, that to me tasted of cough medicine.

Another thing to add is that the syrups did leave a funny taste in my mouth. It’s a medicine taste it leaves in your mouth which I found to linger.

The texture of the syrups is silky smooth. I’m quite funny about textures, I’ve mentioned this a few times on my blog before but thankfully, these were a nice texture. The syrups don’t have any lumps, it isn’t to thick, it isn’t claggy and it doesn’t stick to the roof of your mouth.

COFFEE BARISTA SYRUP:

Over the last year or so I’ve become a iced coffee kinda gal (I know, so unique haha) so when I saw Skinny Foods done syrups pacifically for coffee’s, you just know I had to buy one! I went with the cookie dough flavour as if you know me, you’ll know my deep connection to cookie dough.

After the syrups above not packing a punch when it came to flavour, I didn’t hold out much for this one either. I was wrong to judge that quickly. I actually found this syrup to have much more flavour to it than the syrups. I still had to use a larger amount of syrup to get the flavour I wanted (I like my coffee’s quite sweet) but I could defiantly taste the flavour with each sip. I’d say it defiantly tastes like cookie dough, I wasn’t sure what to expect when first trying it but I was pleasantly surprised that cookie dough tastes good in coffee haha.

I didn’t notice a funny after taste with this syrup either.

Like with the syrups above, this coffee syrup is silky smooth in texture. It doesn’t linger in my mouth, it glides down smoothly and doesn’t have any lumps or bits within it.

SAVOURY SAUCE:

I was really looking forward to trying the Sweet Chilli Mayo as it’s a combination of my two favourite sauces. Unfortunately, I didn’t like the sauce at all.

I found the sauce very VERY sweet, almost too sweet for it to be classed as a chilli mayo. I felt like it was sweet enough to be a sweet syrup. It really didn’t live up to my expectations which I was gutted about. It also left a funny after taste which wasn’t pleasant at all.

Likewise with the other syrups, this was silky smooth and didn’t have any lumps in (as I know some chilli sauces do).

Jam:

The jam certainly wasn’t my favourite.

Now I know you shouldn’t compare these type of products with your everyday jam you buy from a store but i find myself doing so anyway. Whereas the everyday jam is sweet and flavourful, I found this to have a peculiar taste to it (can’t quite put my finger on what it tastes like though) and had an after taste which wasn’t pleasant and lingered.

It actually had a strange texture to it. it was sticky, gloopy but quite watery at the same time. It wasn’t as thick as your everyday jam. It’s one of those jams that I believe the longer you leave it, the more runny it will become.

FLAVOUR DROPS:

This is my absolute favourite product from this brand. if your looking for a product which packs a punch with flavour, this little guy is it!

I’ve made a few milkshakes with this and I found the strawberry flavour was well and truly present. All I used was 6 little drops (like the bottle says) and instantly, you’ve got yourself the most delicious strawberry milkshake. I sometimes find with strawberry products, it can have a plastic taste to it BUT this isn’t like that at all. It’s got a proper strawberry taste!

Texture wise, it’s the same texture as a vanilla extract you get in a bottle. It’s smooth and doesn’t leave an awful taste in your mouth.

I’m yet to try it in one of my bakes but I will be doing that ASAP.

Is The Brand Actually Diabetic Friendly?

This was the one thing I wanted to trial when it came to this brand. It’s quite a big claim to be a ‘diabetic friendly’ brand so I obviously had to put it to the test.

I took my glucose levels before and after each tasting and I can hand on heart say that this brand in my opinion IS diabetic friendly.

I’m comparing these products to a Costa Coffee Frostino as those were the kind of drinks I was trying to make. Anyway, when I have a Costa usually within half hour my glucose levels have risen a considerable amount whereas with these products, I didn’t find my glucose levels to rise at all. My glucose levels practically stayed the same.

Do I Recommend Trying The Brand?

I have mixed opinions. I can see why it’s quite a ‘controversial’ brand.

To me, what was meant to be the star of the show (sweet syrups) was quite a disappointment. I was looking for packs of flavour and I didn’t get that. So honestly, I wouldn’t recommend the sweet syrups, savoury sauce or jam. I wouldn’t repurchase them myself.

That being said, I would defiantly recommend checking out the barista syrups for your coffee’s and the flavour drops, I was really impressed with them both. These two I’d defiantly repurchase / try some more of the flavours.

Overall, I’d defiantly say try this brand yourself if your interested. What one person doesn’t like, another does. I didn’t try everything the brand sells either, so you might find some amazing products. This is just what I’ve found the brand to be like and my own personal opinions on the products I brought.

That’s the end of my review!

This is quite a hefty post but I wanted to cram in as much about the brand and my opinions on it as possible so you could make a decision based off the info I’ve given and my review.

Let me know if you’ve tried the brand before and if so, what were your thoughts on it? What products did you try? Are any of your opinions similar to mine? I’m interested in hearing your thoughts and feelings on this brand.

Sending you all tons of love & hugs as always,

Elle xo

This product has a cute packaging. It’s eye-catchy. But it is not available in Malaysia. So I can’t comment in on it that much.
